Our Stocked Wood.
We aim to supply higher grade quality woods because they are hotter and slower burning than other lower grade woods, resulting in a lower pollution rate, which has recently become an issue in the Nelson/Tasman region.
Well seasoned wood
Well-seasoned firewood generally has darkened ends, is relatively lightweight, and makes a
clear "clunk" when two pieces are knocked together.
The bark usually peels off easily from aged wood.
Freshly cut wood can have a 60% moisture content. Seasoned firewood with a moisture content of less than 25% is easier to start, produces more heat, and burns cleaner.
However, the best way to be sure you have good wood when you need it is to buy your wood early, before you intend to burn it, and store it properly.
Seasoned wood will usually not be affected by small amounts of rain. Wet wood throws off less heat when burned, contributes to creosote build-up and pollution.
Macrocarpa
United States origin, softwood. Family is Cypressaceae. Macrocarpa was introduced into this country in the 1860s. It was planted mostly as shelter belts but occasionally in woodlots and here and there in exotic plantations.
Macrocarpa is a low to medium density wood.
It has a tendency to spark, so is not suitable for open fires. We source ours locally as byproducts from the forestry and milling industries.

Radiata Pine
The family Pinaceae. From California, US. Importance to the NZ forestry industry and also to the Nelson region, and New Zealand's economy. As a firewood the older the tree, the better the burning properties, esp in trees 30yrs+ which is termed "old man pine".
Trees 30yrs+ can contain a high content of resin/gum which is a flammable product.
Whatever the age, pine is
a hot burning wood.
Sourced from private shelterbelts and production woodlots.

Eucalyptus species
Family Myrtaceae. Hardwood origin Australia. Approx 500 species of eucalyptus in existence.
All of these make extremely good firewood as the wood is so dense that is has prolonged burning time, and high heat out-put.
Generally sourced from purpose grown firewood production woodlots.
Order some long burning eucalyptus now.
Wattle
Acacia family. Aleguminosae. Hardwood. Origin Australia.
Burning properties similar properties to the eucalyptus species excepting a slightly lower wood density. Burns relatively slow but very hot.
Our wattle has been sourced from private woodlots.
These two species wattle and eucalyptus have been and are grown in woodlots for firewood production.

Beech
A native to NZ which is not as available as it was previously for firewood and timber use due to legislation changes.
Still reasonably common as a firewood in the Canterbury and Nelson regions.
Beech has excellent burning properties, but is bettered still by gum. Belongs to Fagaceae family and is a hardwood.
The NZ beeches are of ancient lineage originating from Gondwanaland, the vast Southern Continent which straddled the South Pole between 250-360 million years ago.
As a timber it was important to settlers not only for firewood but also as an engineering and structural timber.
Red beech was the most useful structural timber in the early days and was used on the goldmines.
Our beech firewood has been sourced from sustainably grown forestry blocks.
